Agujas Para empezar, usaremos agujas de talla US 8-10.

NeedlesTo start off, we will be using knitting needles sized US 8-10. These sizes are recommended for beginners for a few reasons. First, because they fit comfortably in the hand. Secondly, because they are a standard size, so you will be able to use them on different types of projects.
I will demonstrate using straight needles (shown above), but there are also circular (shown in the middle) and double pointed needles (shown below) for working in tubes. All three can be used for flat work (for scarves and wash cloths), but straight needles are my personal favorite for small projects. The pictures above come from http://www.dummies.com/crafts/knitting/designs-patterns/ which is a great site for free lessons on everything from basics to advanced techniques.

Yarn We will be using worsted weight yarn, because it has a manageable thickness and can be used for a wide variety of projects. For beginners, especially those who would like to crochet, it is best to have a yarn that is smooth rather than textured yarn. It is also better to have plied yarn than singles yarn (shown below), because singles yarn stretch easily.
(Right) Singles or one-ply yarn is made of loosely twisted fibers.
(Left) Plied yarn is made of several singles wrapped together, so its stronger. |
ganchos

hooks The hooks we'll be using are 4-5.5mm (US G/6- I/9). Hooks in this range work well with the medium weight yarn and fit comfortably in the hand. For those who frequently have joint pain in their hands or wrists, it's better to have a hook with a larger handle (shown below).
